Research and Development Projects 

The Unit for Adult Education has promoted research and intervention projects since 1979, financed by national and international institutions. Currently, the Unit is participating in research involving other institutions from European Union countries, financed by the Socrates and Erasmus programmes or other institutions, and is a member of an international consortium E.R.D.I. (European Research Development Institute of Adult Education.) and the E.S.R.E.A. (European Society for Research on the Education of Adults)



Adult Education in the Braga District (1979-1982)
This research project consisted of a survey of the popular associations that have developed initiatives within the sphere of Adult Education.

Participatory Action Research in the Viana do Castelo District (1983-1988)
This research comprised a project carried out with a group of co-operative associations of the Cultural Centre of Alto Minho, co-ordinated and managed by the Unit for Adult Education, in co-operation with the University of Linköping and financed by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.

Associations for Development in Alto Minho (1985-1986)
The goal was to look into the situation of associations in the Viana do Castelo District and it was developed using a database gathered by postal questionnaire.

Perspectives on Adult Education in the European Community (1991-1992)
This research project was developed within the field of the programme of the same name, being the responsibility of the European Community Task Force for Human Resources, Education, Training and Youth and of the Economic and Social Committee for the European Communities.

"State of the Art" Study of Research on the Education of Adults in the European Countries (1992-1994)
This study involved the identification of the main characteristics of the "state of the art" of Adult Education in different European countries.

Adult Education and Lifelong Learning in Europe (1993-1995)
This project was internationally co-ordinated by Walter Leirman of the University of Leuven (Belgium).

Learning in the Workplace (1996-2001)
This research consists of the study of learning developed at the hospital as a workplace. The initial phase of the project consisted of a case study of a ward and the identification of learning that occurred in a work context.

Popularly Initiated Adult Education (1997-2002)
This project was the result of a joint venture between the Universities of Cork, (Republic of Ireland), Linköping (Sweden) and Minho (Portugal).
